How Many Do You Know About The Basic Terminology Of Gears?

Gears have a lot of unique terms and expressions of gears. In order to enable everyone to understand gears more, here are some basic gear terms that are often used.

gear terms

The name of each part of the gear

Nodal surface

The curved surface of an imaginary rolling cylinder (cone, etc.) used to replace gears.

Pitch circle

The right section of the nodal surface.

Addendum circle

The circle formed by the tooth tip connection in the right section of the gear.

Tooth root circle

The circle formed by the connection of the tooth roots in the right section of the gear.

Tooth top height

The meridional distance between the index circle and the addendum circle.

Tooth root height

The meridional distance between the index circle and the tooth root circle.

Tooth tip clearance

The difference between the tooth root height of a gear and the tooth tip height of the meshing gear.

Tooth surface

The tooth surface is located outside the pitch surface.

Tooth belly

The part of the tooth surface located within the pitch surface.

Arc tooth thickness <or tooth thickness>

The thickness of the tooth measured on the index circle. It is the length of the arc, not the length of the straight line.

Cogging

The distance between adjacent teeth measured on the index circle.

Backlash

The gap between the tooth thickness of a gear and the tooth space of the meshing gear

Pitch P

The width of the teeth and grooves measured on the index circle.

Module m

The pitch diameter is divided by the number of teeth. The pitch diameter is usually specified in inches or millimeters. If it is inches, the modulus is the reciprocal of the pitch diameter.

Tooth root fillet

The small radius that connects the profile of the tooth and the root circle.

gear

Engage the smaller gear among the gears. The larger ones are simply referred to as gears.

Speed ratio

The ratio of the number of rotations of the driving gear (or input) to the driven gear (output), in units of time.

Node

The tangent point of the pitch circle of the meshing gear pair.

Common tangent

A straight line tangent to the pitch circle at the node.

Line of action

The normal line of the meshing gear pair profile at its contact point.

Trajectory of contact point

The trajectory of the contact point of the gear pair profile.

Pressure angle

The angle between the common normal of the gear contact point and the common tangent of the index circle is also the angle between the trajectory of the contact point and the common tangent.

Base circle

It is used to expand the gear to generate the imaginary circle of the tooth profile involute.
